The SAT Changes... Yet Again

The SAT Changes... Yet Again

We’ve been through this before (anyone remember when the SAT was out of 2400?!), and we expect to go through it again, but the new PSAT is coming next fall (fall 2023) and the new SAT follows the next spring (spring 2024). We’ve outlined what’s the same, what’s not, and what you should do about all of it.

What’s the same?

  • The SAT is still on that 1600 scale, 800 for Reading/Writing, 800 for Math.

  • Tests take place at school or at a test center (not at home).

  • 75% questions are multiple-choice (four choices these days!) and 25% of the math section are student-produced responses.

  • Students may still bring a pen or pencil and will be provided with scratch paper.

  • Kids have the same access to/quality of accommodations.

What’s not?

  • The new SAT is fully digital (on personal/school-issued or College Board-provided devices).

  • The test is shorter: only two hours instead of three!

  • It’s adaptive–how you perform on module one determines which second module you receive.

  • Scores come faster (think days, not weeks).

  • Reading passages are shorter.

  • Calculators are allowed on all math questions and word problems are more concise.

What should I do about all this?

  • If your child is a junior → stay the course, nothing is changing!

  • If your child is a sophomore → the PSAT will go digital next fall for your kiddos (fall 2023) and the SAT the spring of their junior year (2024), so let’s chat.

  • If your child is a freshman → they’ll take a digital PSAT in the fall if their school gives the PSAT to 10th graders, but we want your kids focused on grades and developing their passions right now!
